Physical Maneuvers
Vertigo—a sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning—can be debilitating, but many cases can be managed naturally through physical maneuvers, dietary shifts, and herbal support.
Most vertigo is caused by Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), where small calcium “crystals” in the inner ear become displaced. Specific movements can shift these back into place:
- Epley Maneuver: This is highly effective for BPPV. While sitting on a bed, turn your head 45 degrees toward the affected ear, lie back quickly with your head over the edge, and hold for 30 seconds. Rotate your head 90 degrees to the other side, hold again, then roll onto your side before sitting up.
- Half Somersault (Foster Maneuver): An alternative to the Epley that is often easier to do alone. It involves kneeling, looking at the ceiling, then tucking your head into a somersault position and turning it toward your elbow.
- Brandt-Daroff Exercises: These help the brain habituate to the dizzy sensation. You sit upright, then quickly lie down on one side with your head turned upward at a 45-degree angle. Wait 30 seconds, sit back up, and repeat on the other side.
Herbal and Dietary Remedies
What you consume directly affects inner ear fluid pressure and blood circulation:
- Ginger: Renowned for its anti-nausea properties, ginger tea or raw ginger can settle the stomach during a vertigo attack.
- Ginkgo Biloba: This herb improves blood flow to the brain and ears. Some studies suggest it can be as effective as pharmaceutical treatments like betahistine for certain types of vertigo.
- Hydration: Even mild dehydration can trigger balance issues. Aim for 6–8 glasses of water daily.
- Low-Sodium Diet: For those with Ménière’s disease, high salt intake increases fluid pressure in the inner ear. Reducing sodium to 1,500mg daily can significantly lessen symptoms.
Lifestyle Adjustments
- Stress Management: Anxiety and stress are major vertigo triggers. Practices like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing help regulate the nervous system.
- Sleep Hygiene: Fatigue can aggravate symptoms. Sleep with your head slightly elevated on two pillows to prevent crystal displacement during the night.
- Vitamin D & B12: Deficiencies in these vitamins are linked to inner ear issues. Increasing intake through sunlight or diet (like egg yolks and fish) may reduce recurrence.
Caution: While natural remedies are effective for many, seek immediate medical attention if vertigo is accompanied by sudden hearing loss, double vision, or difficulty speaking, as these may indicate a more serious condition.
